The iconic flora lining Palm Avenue in San Mateo has piqued the interest of Pacific Gas and Electric, as a pipeline safety project will require the removal of a handful of the trees for which the residential road is named.

About 6 palm trees must be removed after the utility found they were too close to a high-pressure gas transmission pipeline on a block-long strip of the road leading toward the city’s Central Park.
